Pet owners in Ohio will be allowed to set up trust funds to care for their dogs and cats should the owners die or become incapacitated when a new law takes effect Jan. 1.

"Most of the time, we don't think about having money set aside to take care of our pets if something happens to us. We just assume a relative or friend will take care of it," said N. Dean Vickers, Ohio program coordinator for the Humane Society of the United States.

The new law says pet owners can set aside a trust fund with instructions on who will manage the money on behalf of their pets and designate a caregiver.
