Borrowing Policies

Checking Out Materials

To check out material, present the following at the circulation desk:

   • U of M Faculty, Students, Staff -- Valid U Card. 
   •  Friends of the Library (including MAA members) and Special Privilege Borrowers -- Borrowing Card. 

Patrons not affiliated with the University must obtain a borrowing card in order to check out materials. Contact the Borrowing Privileges and Fines office in Wilson Library at 612-624-3383 or 612-624-2882.

Loan Period

As a borrower, you assume full responsibility for the return of Library materials and for providing a correct current address. To borrow materials you must show a valid bar-coded ID or borrower's card. Materials are to be returned or renewed on or before the due date. Reserve, Recalled and Audiovisual materials must be returned directly to the lending library. Books, Journals, and Government Documents may be returned or renewed at any Twin Cities Campus Library.

Books & Theses
   •  Faculty, Staff, Post-Doctoral, Graduate and Honors Students -- 13 weeks, 2 renewals. 
   •  Undergraduate Students, Extension and Adult Special Students, Alumni, Non-University Students, Friends of the Library -- 6 weeks, 2 renewals.
Government Documents
   •  All Borrowers -- 6 weeks, 2 renewals. 
Periodicals
   •  All Borrowers -- 1 day, 2 renewals. 
Audiovisuals & 3-Day Reserves
   •    All Borrowers -- 3 days, 2 renewals 
2-Hour/Overnight Reserves
   •    All Borrowers -- 2 hours; Overnight after 4:00 p.m. (unless stated otherwise), limited renewals. 
2-Hour/Overnight reserve materials may be checked out overnight after 4:00 p.m. Items checked out overnight must be returned to the Veterinary Medical Library within the first hour the Library is open on the day following check-out. The day before an exam 2-hour reserve materials are not available for overnight check-out until 8:00 p.m.

Renewals

Materials may be renewed in any of the following ways.  To avoid fines, materials must be renewed on or before the due date.

Items can be renewed online by logging in HERE.

  • Bring the items and your U Card or borrowing card to the Circulation Desk for immediate renewal on the system. 
  • Phone: (612) 624-4281, during business hours only. When you call during business hours DO NOT leave a voice-mail message. 

Items cannot be renewed if:
   •  Your borrowing card does not permit renewals. 
   •  You have reached the renewal limit. Attempts to renew items more than that may result in overdue fines. 
   •  A recall or hold has been placed for another patron or for reserve.   

Recall Policy

All books are subject to recall. Books may be recalled immediately if needed for course reserve or after two weeks if needed by another patron. Recall due dates supersede all previous due dates. Non-return of recalled materials will result in blocked borrowing privileges and fines.
